Chapter 7

Commanding to good and forbidding from evil (al-amr bil-ma`ruf wa ‘n-nahy `an al-munkar)

Commanding to good and forbidding from evil are two obligatory duties from Allah عز وجل when possible.

It is upon the servant to deny evil by his heart, his tongue, and his hand.  If he is not able to do this, then by his heart and his tongue, and if he is not able to do this then by his heart.

As-Sadiq عليه السلام said, “Whenever a believer is commanded to good and forbidden from evil, he takes heed.  If an ignorant person, then he learns.  However, a man of the sword and whip, then no.”
