Rijal al-Fadl b. Shadhan

The following are reports from al-Kashshi's Rijal (unless otherwise indicated) narrating from al-Fadl b. Shadhan, reporting his views or relevant narrations in regards to different rijal.

حكي عن الفضل بن شاذان انه قالما نشأ في الاسلام رجل من كافة الناس كان أفقه من سلمان الفارسي


It is related from al-Fadl b. Shadhan that he said: There has not emerged a man in Islam from all of the people someone with more profound understanding (afqah) than Salman al-Farsi.


قال أبو عمرو الكشي - فيما أخبرني به غير واحد من أصحابنا عن جعفر بن محمد عنه -: حدثنى علي بن محمد بن قتيبة قالحدثني الفضل بن شاذان قالحدثني عبد العزيز بن المهتدي، وكان خير قمي رأيته، وكان وكيل الرضا عليه السلام وخاصته فقالإني سألته فقلتإني لا أقدر على لقائك في كل وقت، فعمن آخذ معالم ديني ؟ فقال: " خذ عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن ".


Abu `Amr al-Kashshi said: In what more than one of our companions reported to me from Ja`far b. Muhammad from him: `Ali b. Muhammad b. Qutayba narrated to me.  He said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan narrated to me.  He said: `Abd al-`Aziz al-Muhtadi narrated to me – and he was the best Qummi I have seen, and he was the representative of ar-Rida عليه السلام and his choice associate.  So he said: I asked him and said: Verily I am not able to meet you all the time, so from whom do I take the guideposts of my religion?  So he said: Take from Yunus b. `Abd ar-Rahman.



وسئل الفضل بن شاذان عن أبي أيوب خالد بن زيد الانصاري وقتاله مع معاوية المشركين ؟ فقالكان ذلك منه قلة فقه وغفلة، ظن أنه انما يعمل عملا لنفسه يقوي به الاسلام ويوهي به الشرك وليس عليه من معاوية شئ كان معه أولم يكن


al-Fadl b. Shadhan was asked about Abu Ayyub Khalid b. Zayd al-Ansari and his fighting with Mu`awiya against the mushrikeen.  So he said: That was a paucity of deeper understanding and carelessness from him.  He supposed that he was only doing an act for himself strengthening thereby Islam and undermining shirk, but there was nothing upon him from Mu`awiya whether with him or not.


وقال الفضل بن شاذانانه من السابقين الذين رجعوا إلى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام


al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: He was from the foremost who returned to Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام.


على بن محمد القتيبي، قال، قال الفضل بن شاذانثم عرف الناس بعده فمن التابعين ورؤسائهم وزهادهم زيد بن صوحان


`Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Qutaybi said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: Then the people came to recognize after him, so from the Tabi`een and their chiefs and their ascetics was Zayd b. Sawhan.


قال الفضل بن شاذانفمن التابعين الكبارو روسائهم وزهادهم جندب ابن زهير قاتل الساحر، وعبد الله بن بديل، وحجر بن عدي، وسليمان بن صرد، والمسيب بن نجبة، وعلقمة والاشتر، وسعيد بن قيس، واشباههم كثير، أفناهم الحرب ثم كثروا بعد، حتى قتلوا مع الحسين عليه السلام وبعده.


al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: So from the great Tabi`een and their chiefs and their ascetics was Jundub b. Zuhayr killer of the sorcerer, `Abdullah b. Budayl, Hijr b. `Udayy, Sulayman b. Sard, al-Musayyid b. Nujba, `Alqama, al-Ashtar and Sa`id b. Qays.  And their likes were many.  War annihilated them, then they became many afterwards, until they fought (were killed?) along with al-Husayn عليه السلام and after him.


علي بن محمد بن قتيبة، قالسئل أبو محمد الفضل بن شاذان، عن الزهاد الثمانية ؟ فقالالربيع بن خثيم، وهرم بن حيان،  وأويس القرني، وعامر بن عبد قيس، وكانوا مع علي عليه السلام ومن أصحابه وكانوا زهادا أتقياء


`Ali b. Muhammad b. Qutayba said: Abu Muhammad al-Fadl b. Shadhan was asked about the eight ascetics.  So he said: Ar-Rabi` b. Khuthaym, Haram b. Hayan, Uways al-Qarni, `Amir b. `Abd Qays, and they were with `Ali عليه السلام and from him companions.  And they were god-fearing ascetics.


قال الفضل بن شاذانولم يكن في زمن علي بن الحسين عليه السلام في أول أمره الا خمسة أنفسسعيد بن جبير، سعيد بن المسيب، محمد بن جبير ابن مطعم، يحيى بن أم الطويل، أبو خالد الكابلي وأسمه وردان ولقبه كنكر، سعيد بن المسيب رباه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام، وكان حزن جد سعيد أوصى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام.


al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: In the beginning of his affair, there was no one with `Ali b. al-Husayn عليه السلام except for five people: Sa`id b. Jubayr, Sa`id b. al-Musayyib, Muhammad b. Jubayr b. Mat`am, Yahya b. Umm at-Tawil, and Abu Khalid al-Kabuli – and his name was Wardan, his laqab was Kankar.  Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام raised Sa`id b. al-Musayyib, and it was the grief (?, family for whom one grieves?) of the grandfather of Sa`id that bequeathed (to?) Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام.



محمد بن مسعود، قالحدثني عبد الله بن حمدويه البيهقي، قالسمعت الفضل بن شاذان، يقولزحل أبو حفص يروي المناكير، وليس بغال


Muhammad b. Mas`ud said: `Abdullah b. Hamdawayh al-Bayhaqi narrated to me.  He said: I heard al-Fadl b. Shadhan saying: Zuhal Abu Hafs narrates manakir, but he is not a ghal.


قال أبو محمد الفضل بن شاذانكان أبوالبختري من أكذب البرية.


Abu Muhammad al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: Abu ‘l-Bakthari was of the most lying of human beings.


وجدت بخط محمد بن شاذان بن نعيم في كتابه، سمعت أبا محمد القماص الحسن بن علوية الثقة، يقولسمعت الفضل بن شاذان، يقولحج يونس بن عبد الرحمن أربعا وخمسين حجة، واعتمر أربعا وخمسين عمرة، وألف ألف جلد ردا على المخالفينويقالانتهى علم الائمة عليهم السلام الى أربعة نفرأولهم سلمان الفارسي، والثاني جابر، والثالث السيد، والرابع يونس بن عبد الرحمن.


I found in the handwriting of Muhammad b. Shadhan b. Na`im in his book: I heard Abu Muhammad al-Qammas al-Hasan b. `Alawiyya the thiqa saying: I heard al-Fadl b. Shadhan saying: Yunus b. `Abd ar-Rahman performed fifty four hajj, and performed fifty four `umra, and authored a thousand volumes refuting the opponents.  And it is said: The knowledge of the Imams عليهم السلام ended up in four individuals: the first of them is Salman al-Farsi, the second is Jabir, the third is the Sayyid, and the fourth is Yunus b. `Abd ar-Rahman.


وقال الفضل بن شاذانسمعت الثقة يقولسمعت الرضا عليه السلام يقولأبو حمزة الثمالي في زمانه كسلمان في زمانه، وذلك أنه خدم أربعة منا علي بن الحسين ومحمد بن علي وجعفر بن محمد وبرهة من عصر موسى بن جعفر عليهم السلام، ويونس في زمانه كسلمان الفارسي في زمانه.


al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: I heard the thiqa saying: I heard ar-Rida عليه السلام saying: Abu Hamza ath-Thumali in his time was as Salman in his time, and that is that he served four of us: `Ali b. al-Husayn and Muhammad b. `Ali and Ja`far b. Muhammad and a short while from the time of Musa b. Ja`far عليهم السلام.  And Yunus in his time is as Salman al-Farsi in his time.


علي بن محمد القتيبي، قالسألت الفضل بن شاذان، عن الحديث الذي روى في يونس أنه لقيط آل يقطين ؟ فقالكذب، ولد يونس في آخر زمن هشام بن عبد الملك، ويقطين لم يكن في ذلك الزمان انما كان ولد في زمن ولد العباس.


`Ali b. Muhammad al-Qutaybi said: I asked al-Fadl b. Shadhan about the hadith which is narrated concerning Yunus that he was the foundling of the family of Yaqtin.  So he said: A lie.  Yunus was born at the end of the time of Hisham b. `Abd al-Malik, and Yaqtin was not (alive) in that time.  He was only born in the time of the children of al-`Abbas.


علي بن محمد القتيبي، قالحدثنا الفضل بن شاذان قالكان أحمد ابن محمد بن عيسى تاب واستغفر الله من وقيعته في يونس لرؤيا رآها، وقد كان علي بن حديد يظهر في الباطن الميل الى يونس وهشام.


`Ali b. Muhammad al-Qutaybi said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan narrated to us.  He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa repented and sought forgiveness of Allah from his encounter regarding Yunus due to a vision he saw.  And `Ali b. Hadid showed on the inside inclination to Yunus and Hisham.


جعفر بن معروف، قالحدثني الفضل بن شاذان، بحديث عبد العزيز ابن المهتدي فقال الفضلما رأيت قميا يشبهه في زمانه.


Ja`far b. Muhammad said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan narrated to me the hadith of `Abd al-`Aziz b. al-Muhtadi, and al-Fadl said: I have not seen a Qummi who is like him in his time.


قال محمد بن مسعود، قال عبد الله بن حمدويهسمعت الفضل بن شاذان، يقوللا أستحل أن أروي أحاديث محمد بن سنان، وذكر الفضل في بعض كتبهأن من الكاذبين المشهورين ابن سنان وليس بعبدالله.


Muhammad b. Mas`ud said: `Abdullah b. Hamdawayh said: I heard al-Fadl b. Shadhan saying: I do not deem it lawful for me to narrate the ahadith of Muhammad b. Sinan.  And al-Fadl mentioned in one of his books that from the famous liars is Ibn Sinan – and he is not `Abdullah.


أبو الحسن علي بن محمد بن قتيبة النيسابوري، قال قال أبو محمد الفضل بن شاذانردوا أحاديث محمد بن سنان وقاللا أحل لكم أن ترووا أحاديث محمد بن سنان عني مادمت حيا، وأذن في الرواية بعد موته.


Abu ‘l-Hasan `Ali b. Muhammad b. Qutayba an-Naysaburi said: Abu Muhammad al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: Return the ahadith of Muhammad b. Sinan. And he said: I do not allow you to narrate from me the ahadith of Muhammad b. Sinan so long as I remain alive.  And he gave permission for the narration after his death.


وذكر أبو محمد الفضل بن شاذان في بعض كتبه أن من الكذابين المشهورين ابن بابا القمي.


Abu Muhammad al-Fadl b. Shadhan mentioned in one of his book that from the famous liars is Ibn Baba al-Qummi.


وذكر الفضل بن شاذان في بعض كتبهأن من الكذابين المشهورين علي بن حسكةفي العباس بن صدقة وأبى العباس الطرنانى وأبى عبد الرحمن الكندى المعروف بشاه رئيس منهم أيضا


Al-Fadl b. Shadhan mentioned in one of his book that from the famous liars is `Ali b. Huska.  In regards to al-`Abbas b. Sadaqa, Abu ‘l-`Abbas at-Tarnani, and Abu `Abd ar-Rahman al-Kindi who is known as Shah Ra’is, that they are also from them.


وذكر الفضل بن شاذان في بعض كتبهأن من الكذابين المشهورين الفاجر فارس بن حاتم القزويني.


al-Fadl b. Shadhan mentioned in one of his book that from the famous liars is the dissolute Faris b. Hatim al-Qazwini.


حدثني علي بن محمد القتيبي، قال الفضل بن شاذانمحمد بن الحسن كان كريما على أبي جعفر عليه السلام، وأن أبا الحسن عليه السلام أنفذ نفقته في مرضه وأكفنه وأقام مأتمه عند موته.


`Ali b. Muhammad al-Qutaybi narrated to me: al-Fadl b. Shadhan said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan was held in high estimation by Abu Ja`far عليه السلام, and that Abu ‘l-Hasan عليه السلام did his expenditure during his illness, gave kafan to him, and carried out his ma’tam at his death.


حدثني علي بن محمد القتيبي، قالحدثني الفضل بن شاذان قالحدثني أبو جعفر البصري، وكان ثقة فاضلا صالحا.


`Ali b. Muhammad al-Qutaybi narrated to me.  He said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan narrated to me.  He said: Abu Ja`far al-Basri narrated to me, and he was thiqa, virtuous, righteous.


قال علي بن محمد القتيبي، سمعت الفضل بن شاذان، يقول في أبى الخيروهو صالح بن سلمة أبي حماد الرازي كما كنى،


`Ali b. Muhammad al-Qutaybi said: I heard al-Fadl b. Shadhan saying regarding Abu ‘l-Khayr: And he was Salih b. Salama, Abu Hammad ar-Razi as he has the kunya.


سئل الفضل بن شاذان عن ابن مسعود وحذيفة، فقاللم يكن حذيفة مثل ابن مسعود، لأن حذيفة كان زكيا  وابن مسعود خلط ووالى القوم ومال معهم وقال لهم


al-Fadl b. Shadhan was asked about Ibn Mas`ud and Hudhayfa, so he said: Hudhayfa was not like Ibn Mas`ud, for Hudhayfa was pure while Ibn Mas`ud was mixed, and he followed the people and inclined with them and spoke for them.


عثمان بن حنيف الأنصاريوروى الكشي عن الفضل بن شاذان أنه من السابقين الذين رجعوا إلى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام


`Uthman b. Hunayf al-Ansari: al-Kashshi narrated from al-Fadl b. Shadhan that he was from the foremost who returned to Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام.


عمرو  بن الحمق الخزاعيوروى الكشي عن الفضل بن شاذان أنه من السابقين الذين رجعوا إلى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام


`Amr b. al-Hamaq al-Khuza`i: al-Kashshi narrated from al-Fadl b. Shadhan that he was from the foremost who returned to Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام.


قيس بن سعد بن عبادةوروى الكشي عن الفضل بن شاذان أنه من السابقين الذين رجعوا إلى أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)



Qays b. Sa`d b. `Abbada: al-Kashshi narrated from al-Fadl b. Shadhan that he was from the foremost who returned to Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام


أبو الهيثم بن التيهان : روى الكشي عن الفضل بن شاذان أنه من السابقين الذين رجعوا إلى أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)


Abu ‘l-Haytham b. at-Tayhan: al-Kashshi narrated from al-Fadl b. Shadhan that he was from the foremost who returned to Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام.


ذكر الفضل بن شاذان في بعض كتبهالكذابون المشهورون أبو الخطاب ويونس بن ظبيان ويزيد الصائغ ومحمد بن سنان وأبو سمينة أشهرهم


al-Fadl b. Shadhan mentioned in one of his books:  The famous liars (were) Abu ‘l-Khattab, Yunus b. Zhibyan, Yazid as-Sa’igh, Muhammad b. Sinan and Abu Samina was the most famous of them.


 محمد بن عيسى بن عبيدابن يقطين بن موسى :قال أبو عمروقال القتيبيكان الفضل بن شاذان يحب العبيدي ويثني عليه ويمدحه ويميل إليه ويقولليس في أقرانه مثله، وبحسبك هذا الثناء من الفضل رحمه الله


Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd b. Yaqtin b. Musa: Abu `Amr said: al-Qutaybi said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan used to love al-`Ubaydi, praise him, commend him, and incline to him and say: There is not in his like in his peers, and this praise suffices you from al-Fadl, may Allah have mercy on him.


وقال علي بن محمد القتيبي قالحدثني الفضل بن شاذان قالحدثني محمد بن الحسن الواسطي وجعفر بن عيسى ومحمد بن يونس أن الرضا (عليه السلامضمن ليونس الجنة ثلاث مرات


`Ali b. Muhammad al-Qutaybi said: al-Fadl b. Shadhan narrated to me.  He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Wasiti and Ja`far b. `Isa and Muhammad b. Yunus narrated to me that ar-Rida عليه السلام guaranteed the Garden for Yunus three times.


نوح بن شعيب البغدادي، ذكر الفضل بن شاذان انه كان فقيها عالما صالحا مرضيا، وقيلانه نوح بن صالح


Nuh b. Shu`ayb al-Baghdadi:  al-Fadl b. Shadhan mentioned that he was a faqih, an `alim, righteous, acceptable.  And it is said that he is Nuh b. Salih ( - from Tusi’s Rijal)
