72 – And a sect of the people of the Book say, 'Believe in what was revealed to those who believed at the first appearance of the day, and disbelieve it at the end thereof,' – that they may perchance go back.

[Tafsir al-Qummi] Abu ‘l-Jarud from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام regarding His saying “And a sect of the people of the Book say, 'Believe in what was revealed to those who believed at the first appearance of the day, and disbelieve it at the end thereof,' – that they may perchance go back” When the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله arrived at Medina, and he was praying in the direction of the House of Holiness (Jerusalem), the Jews were pleased by that, so when Allah changed it from the House of Holiness to the Sacred House of Allah (the Ka`ba in Mecca), the Jews were upset with that.  And the changing of the qibla was during the salat of zhuhr.  So they said: Muhammad prayed the morning (salat) while facing our qibla, so we believe in what was sent down to him at the first appearance of the day and we disbelieve in its end – meaning the qibla when the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله faced the Sacred Masjid – “that they may perchance go back” to our qibla.
