189 – They question you concerning the new moons. Say: 'They are appointed times for the people, and the hajj.' And it is not piety to come to the houses from the backs of them; but piety is to be godfearing; so come to the houses by their doors, and fear Allah; haply so you will prosper.

[at-Tahdhib] Abu ‘l-Hasan Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Dawud from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Sa`id from Abu ‘l-Hasan b. al-Qasim from `Ali b. Ibrahim from Ahmad b. `Isa b. `Abdullah from `Abdullah b. `Ali b. al-Hasan from his father from Ja`far b. Muhammad عليهما السلام regarding His عزوجل saying “Say: They are appointed times for the people and the hajj” He said: For their fast and their breaking of the fast and their hajj.

[Tafsir al-`Ayyashi] From Sa`d from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: I asked him about this aya “And it is not piety to come to the houses from the backs of them; but piety is to be godfearing; so come to the houses by their doors”.  So he said: The family of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله are the doors of Allah and His path, and the callers to the Garden and the chiefs to it, and the signs of it to (or: until) the Day of the Resurrection.

[Majma` al-Bayan] “And it is not piety is not that you come to the houses from their backs”, regarding it there are (different) aspects.  The first of them is that evil doers would not enter their houses from their doors, but would instead bore a hole in the backs of their houses, that is in their rear there would be an excavation that they would enter and exit from.  So they were prohibited from religiousity by that. Abu ‘l-Jarud narrated it from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.
