207

207 – And there is from the people someone who sells his soul craving those things that are pleasing unto Allah, and Allah is kind unto His servants.

[Tafsir al-`Ayyashi] From Jabir from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام.  He said: As to His saying “And there is from the people someone who sells his soul craving those things that are pleasing unto Allah, and Allah is kind unto His servants” it was sent down regarding `Ali b. Abi Talib عليه السلام when he sacrificed himself for Allah and for His Messenger on the night he recline on the bed of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله when the unbelievers of Quraysh sought him.

[Tafsir al-Hibari] `Ali b. Muhammad narrated to us.  He said: al-Hibari narrated to me.  He said: Yahya b. `Abd al-Hamid narrated to us.  He said: Abu `Awana narrated to us from Abu Balj from `Amr b. Maymun from Ibn `Abbas regarding `Ali ‌عليه‌ السلام‌ when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم departed to the cave, so the Prophet ‌عليه‌ السلام‌ had him sleep in his place and wear his gown.  So Quraysh came wanting to kill the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, so they set about smiting `Ali while they saw that he was the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم. [And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم had him wear him gown.]  So he began to writhe with pain and they looked, and behold it was `Ali ‌عليه‌ السلام‌.  So they said: You are indeed a sleeper, were it your companion he would not writhe with pain, indeed we have no knowledge of that (or: disapprove of that) from him.
