14

14 – O you who believe, be you helpers of Allah, as `Isa the son of Maryam said to the Apostles, 'Who are my helpers to Allah?' The apostles said, 'We are Allah's helpers.' So a party of the Children of Israel believed, and a party disbelieved. And we aided those who believed against their enemies, and they became on the morrow ascendant.

قوله: { يا أيها الذين آمنوا كونوا أنصار الله } إلى قوله { فآمنت طائفة من بني إسرائيل وكفرت طائفة } قال: التي كفرت هي التي قتلت شبيه عيسى عليه السلام وصلبته والتي آمنت هي التي قبلت شبيه عيسى حتى لا يقتل (فقتلت الطائفة التي قتلته وصلبته وهو قوله: { فأيدنا الذين آمنوا على عدوهم فأصبحوا ظاهرين }

Tafsir al-Qummi: His saying “O you who believe, be you helpers of Allah” until His saying “And a party of the Children of Israel believed, and a party disbelieved.”  He said: The one which disbelieved was the one that killed the likeness (shabeeh) of `Isa عليه السلام and crucified him, and the one that believed was the one that accepted the likeness of `Isa in order that he not be killed.  So the party that killed him and crucified him was killed, and it is His saying “And we aided those who believed against their enemies, and they became on the morrow ascendant.”

al-Kafi: Muhammad b. Ya`qub from Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad and from a number of our companions from Sahl b. Ziyad all from Ibn Mahbub from Abu Yahya Kawkab ad-Dam from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.  He said: The Apostles of `Isa عليه السلام were his Shi`a, and our Shi`a are our Apostles.  And the Apostles of `Isa were not more obedient to him than our Apostles are to us.

And `Isa only said to the Apostles “'Who are my helpers to Allah?' The apostles said, 'We are Allah's helpers”.  And no, by Allah, they did not help him from the Jews and did not fight them without him.  But our Shi`a, by Allah, have not ceased helping us since Allah عز ذكره took His Messenger صلى الله عليه و آله, and fighting without us, and being burnt and being punished, and being driven out from the cities.  May Allah requite them with good from us.

And Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام said: By Allah, were I to strike the nose of our lovers by the sword they would not hate us.  And by Allah, were I to draw near the ones who hate us and give much to them from the wealth they would not love us.

Translator’s note: The above hadith can also be found in Tafsir Furat al-Kufi, except that instead of حثوت لهم من المال (give much to them from the wealth) it reads وحبوت له من المال حبواً (give to them a gift from the wealth) .

Ta’wil al-Ayat: Muhammad b. al-`Abbas said: Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Sabiq narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Abd al-Malik b. Zanjawayh from `Abd ar-Razzaq from Ma`mar.  He said: Qutada recited “O you who believe, be you helpers of Allah, as `Isa the son of Maryam said to the Apostles, 'Who are my helpers for Allah?'” He said: By the praise of Allah, Muhammad was and there came to him Apostles, who pledged allegiance to him and helped him until Allah made His religion victorious.  And all of the Apostles were from Quraysh.  So he mentioned `Ali, Hamza, Ja`far عليهم السلام, `Uthman b. Mazh`un and others.
