What the Quran was sent down regarding

1 – From Abu ‘l-Jarud.  He said: I heard Abu Ja`far عليه السلام saying: The Quran was sent down in four fourths: a fourth regarding us, a fourth regarding our enemy, a fourth regarding obligation and rules, and fourth regarding traditions and examples, and for us are the precious things of the Quran.

2 – From `Abdullah b. Sinan.  He said: I asked Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام about the Quran and the Furqan.  He said: The Quran is the totality of the Book and reports of what is (or: will be).  And the Furqan is the muhkam (decisive) which is acted by, and every muhkam is a furqan (criterion).

3 – And from al-Asbagh b. Nabata.  He said: I heard Amir al-Mu’mineen عليه السلام saying: The Quran was sent down in the three thirds: a third regarding us and regarding our enemy, a third traditions and examples, and a third obligations and rules.

4 – From `Abdullah b. Bukayr from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.  He said: The Quran was sent down with “You I mean and listen O neighbor”.

Translator’s note: This is an Arabic proverb that refers to one person being addressed, but someone else being intended.

5 – From Ibn Abi `Umayr from the one who narrated to him from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.  He said: Whatever Allah admonished His prophet then He means by it someone who had passed in the Quran like His saying “And had it not been that We established you, you would have well-nigh leant towards them a little” (17:74) He meant by that other than him.

6 – From Abu Basir.  He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام saying: The Quran is a deterrent and a commander, commanding to the Garden and deterring from the Fire.

7 – From Muhammad b. Khalid b. al-Hajjaj al-Karkhi from one of his companions going up from him to Khaythama.  He said: Abu Ja`far said: O Khaythama, the Quran was sent down in three thirds: a third regarding us and regarding our lovers, a third regarding our enemies and the enemy of who was prior to us, and a third of tradition and example.  And were the aya when it was sent down regarding a people, then those people died, the aya would die, so (?) nothing would remain of the Quran.  However, the Quran its beginning flows upon its end so long as the heavens and earth (endure).  And for every people is an aya, reciting it, and they are in regards to it good or evil.
