From Surat al-Baqara

 

{ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِين آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلأَنْهَٰرُ كُلَّمَا رُزِقُواْ مِنْهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقاً قَالُواْ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِي رُزِقْنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَأُتُواْ بِهِ مُتَشَٰبِهاً وَلَهُمْ فِيهَآ أَزْوَٰجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ }

حَدَّثَنَا عليُّ بنُ محمَّدٍ، قالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الحِبَرِيُّ، قالَ: حَدَّثَنِي حَسَنُ بنُ حُسَيْنٍ، قالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ بنُ عليٍّ العَنزِيُّ، عن الكَلْبِيّ، عن أَبي صَالِحٍ، عن ابنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قالَ فِيما نَزَلَ مِنَ القُرْآنِ في خَاصَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عليهِ [وآلِهِ] وَسَلَّمَ، وعليٍّ، وأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ دُونَ النَّاسِ: { وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِين آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ }. إنَّهَا نَزَلَتْ في: عليٍّ وَحَمْزَةَ وجَعْفَر وَعُبَيْدَة بن الحَارثِ بنِ عَبْدِ المُطَّلبِ.

 

And give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow; whenever they are provided with fruit therefrom they say, 'This is what we were provided with before,' and they shall be provided with the like; and there are pure wives for them therein, and they shall dwell therein forever. (2:25)

`Ali b. Muhammad narrated to us.  He said: al-Hibari narrated to me.  He said: Hasan b. Husayn narrated to me.  He said: Hibban b. `Ali al-`Anzi narrated to us from al-Kalbi from Abu Salih from Ibn `Abbas.  He said: In what was sent down of the Quran exclusively about the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and `Ali and his Ahl al-Bayt apart from the people [from surat al-baqara] is “And give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness” [(to the end of) the aya].  It was sent down regarding `Ali and Hamza and Ja`far and `Ubayda b. al-Harith b. `Abd al-Muttalib.

 

{ وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلٰوةَ وَآتُواْ ٱلزَّكَٰوةَ وَٱرْكَعُواْ مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ }

حَدَّثَنَا عليُّ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قالَ: حَدَّثَني الحِبَريُّ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا الحَسَنُ بنُ حُسَيْنٍ، قالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ، عن الكَلْبِيّ، عن أَبي صالِحٍ، عن ابنِ عَبَّاسٍ: قَوْلُهُ: { وَٱرْكَعُواْ مَعَ ٱلرَّاكِعِينَ }. أَنَّها نَزَلَتْ في: رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ [وَآلِهِ]، وَعَلِيٍّ ابن أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ، وَهُما أَوَّلُ مَنْ صَلَّى وَرَكَعَ.

 

Establish the salat and give the zakat, and bow with those who bow. (2:43)

`Ali b. Muhammad narrated to us.  He said: al-Hibari narrated to me.  He said: al-Hasan b. Husayn narrated to us.  He said: Hibban narrated to us from al-Kalbi from Abu Salih from Ibn `Abbas: His saying “and bow (do ruku`) with those who bow” It was sent down regarding the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and `Ali b. Abi Talib.  And they were the first who prayed and did ruku`.

 

{ وَٱسْتَعِينُواْ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَٰوةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلاَّ عَلَى ٱلْخَٰشِعِينَ }

وَقَوْلُهُ: { وَٱسْتَعِينُواْ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلاَةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلاَّ عَلَى ٱلْخَاشِعِينَ }. الخَاشِعُ: الذَلِيْلُ في صَلاتِهِ، المُقْبِلُ عَلَيْهَا، يَعْنِي: رَسُوْلُ الله صَلّى الله عَلَيْهِ [وآلِهِ] وَعَلِيُّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ.

 

Seek aid by patience and prayer, and truly it is a hard thing save for the humble. (2:45)

And His saying “Seek aid by patience and prayer, and truly it is a hard thing save for the humble.” The humble: the servile in his prayers, the coming (?) upon them, meaning: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and `Ali ‌عليه‌ السلام‌.

 

{ ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُواْ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ }

وَقَولُهُ: { ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلاَقُواْ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ }. نَزَلَتْ في: عَليٍّ وعُثْمانَ بنِ مَظْعُونَ وَعَمَّارِ بنِ ياسِرٍ وَأَصْحابٍ لَهُمْ.

 

Those who think that they will meet their Lord, and that to Him will they return (2:46)

And His saying “those who think that they will meet their Lord, and that to Him will they return” was sent down regarding `Ali and `Uthman b. Mazh`un and `Ammar b. Yasir and companions of theirs. 

 

{ بَلَىٰ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةً وَأَحَاطَتْ بِهِ خَطِيـۤئَتُهُ فَأُوْلَـۤئِكَ أَصْحَابُ ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ }

وَقولُهُ: { بَلَىٰ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةً وَأَحَاطَتْ بِهِ خَطِيـۤئَتُهُ }. نَزَلَتْ في أَبِي جَهْلٍ.

 

Yea, whoso gains an evil gain, and is encompassed by his sins, those are the fellows of the Fire, and they shall dwell therein forever. (2:81)

And His saying “Yea, whoso gains an evil gain, and is encompassed by his sins” was sent down regarding Abu Jahl.  

 

{ وَٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ }

{ وَٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ }. نَزَلْتْ في عَليٍّ خَاصَّةً، وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مُؤْمِنٍ وَأَوَّلُ مُصَلٍّ بَعْدَ النَّبِيٍّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ [وَآلِهِ].

 

But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, those are the fellows of the Garden, and they shall dwell therein forever. (2:82)

And His saying “But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, those are the fellows of the Garden, and they shall dwell therein forever” was sent down regarding `Ali specifically, and he is the first believer and the first person who prayed after the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم.

 

{ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ رَؤُوفٌ بِٱلْعِبَادِ }

حَدَّثَنَا عليٌّ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَني الحِبَرِيُّ، قالَ: حَدَّثَنا يَحْيَى بنُ عَبْدِ الحَمِيْدِ، قالَ: حَدَّثنا أَبو عوَانَة، عن أَبي بَلْجٍ عن عَمْرِو بنِ مَيْمُون، عن: ابنِ عَبَّاسٍ: في عَليٍّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ لَمّا انْطَلَقَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ [وَآلِهِ] وَسَلَّمَ الى الغَار، فَأَنامَهُ النَّبِيُّ علَيْهِ السَّلامُ في مَكَانِهِ، وَأَلْبَسَهُ بُرْدَهُ، فَجائَتْ قريش تريد أن تقتل النبيّ صلّى الله عليه [وآله] فجعلوا يرمون عليّاً، وهم يرون أنه النبيّ صلّى الله عليهِ وآلِهِ، (وقد ألبسه النبيّ صلّى الله عليه [وآله] برده) فجعل يَتَضَوَّرُ، فنظروا، فاذا هو عليّ عليه السلام فقالوا: انك لنائم ألو كان صاحبك ما تضور، لقد استنكرنا ذلك منه.

 

And there is among men one who selleth his soul craving, those things that are pleasing unto Allah and Allah is kind unto His servants. (2:207)

`Ali b. Muhammad narrated to us.  He said: al-Hibari narrated to me.  He said: Yahya b. `Abd al-Hamid narrated to us.  He said: Abu `Awana narrated to us from Abu Balj from `Amr b. Maymun from Ibn `Abbas regarding `Ali ‌عليه‌ السلام‌ when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم departed to the cave, so the Prophet ‌عليه‌ السلام‌ had him sleep in his place and wear his gown.  So Quraysh came wanting to kill the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, so they set about smiting `Ali while they saw that he was the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم. [And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم had him wear him gown.]  So he began to writhe with pain and they looked, and behold it was `Ali ‌عليه‌ السلام‌.  So they said: Verily you are a sleeper, were it your companion he would not writhe with pain, indeed we have no knowledge of that (or, disapprove of that) from him.

 

{ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ بِٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ سِرّاً وَعَلاَنِيَةً فَلَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ }

حَدَّثَنَا علَيٌّ بنُ مُحَمَّد، قالَ: حَدَّثَنا الحِبَريُّ، قَال: حَدَّثَنا حَسَنُ بنُ حُسَيْنٍ، قالَ: حَدَّثَنا حِبَّانُ، عن الكَلْبيّ، عن أبى صالِحٍ، عن: ابنِ عَبَّاسٍ: قَوْلُهُ: { ٱلَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ بِٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ سِرّاً وَعَلاَنِيَةً }. نَزَلَتْ في عَلِيٍّ خَاصَّةً، في أَرْبَعَةٍ دَنانِيْرَ كانَتْ لَهُ، تَصَدَّقَ مِنْها نَهاراً وَبَعْضَها لَيْلاً وَبَعْضَها سِرّاً، وَبَعْضَها عَلانِيَةً.

 

Those who expend their wealth by night and day, secretly and openly, they shall have their hire with their Lord. No fear shall come on them, nor shall they grieve. (2:274)

10 – `Ali b. Muhammad narrated to us.  He said: al-Hibari narrated to us.  He said: Hasan b. Husayn narrated to us. He said: Hibban narrated to us from al-Kalbi from Abu Salih from Ibn `Abbas.  His saying “those who spend their wealth” was sent down regarding `Ali specifically, regarding four dinars that were his.  He gave charity from then by day and some of it by night, and some of it secretly and some of it openly.
