Hud

From Sūra Hūd

{ أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ وَيَتْلُوهُ شَاهِدٌ مِّنْهُ وَمِن قَبْلِهِ كِتَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِمَاماً وَرَحْمَةً أُوْلَـٰئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِ مِنَ ٱلأَحْزَابِ فَٱلنَّارُ مَوْعِدُهُ فَلاَ تَكُ فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِّنْهُ إِنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ }

And what of him who stands upon a clear sign from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it, and before him is the Book of Moses for an ensample and a mercy? Those believe in it; but whosoever disbelieves in it, being one of the partisans, his promised land is the Fire. So be thou not in doubt of it; it is the truth from thy Lord, but most men do not believe. (11:17)

[Tafsir al-Ḥibari] ʿAlī b. Muḥammad narrated to us.  He said: ʿAlī b. Muḥammad narrated to us.  He said: Ismāʿīl b. Ṣabīḥ narrated to us.  He said: Abū al-Jārūd narrated to us from Ḥabīb b. Yasār from Zādhān.  He said: I heard ʿAlī عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ saying:

By the One who split the grain, and released the breeze, were a cushion to be folded for me and I sat upon it, I would judge between the people of the Torah by their Torah, and between the people of the Gospel by their Gospel, and between the people of the Zabūr by their Zabūr, and between the people of the Furqān by their Furqān, by an judgment that would shine, ascending unto God.

By God, not a verse has been sent down in a night or day, or a plain or a mountain, or a land or a sea, but that I have known which hour it was sent down, and regarding whom it was sent down.

There is not from Quraysh a man upon whom the razors have been drawn, but that I know him, which is led to a Garden and which is led to a Fire.

So a man stood up and said: What is your verse, O Commander of the Believers, which was sent down regarding you?

He said: “And what of him who stands upon a clear sign from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it”.  So the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهٍ [وَآلِهِ] وَسَلَّمَ is upon a clear sign from his Lord, and I am the witness from Him.  I recite it: I follow it (or: him).

ʿAlī b. Muḥammad narrated to us.  He said: al-Ḥibarī al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥakam narrated to me.  He said: Ḥasan b. Ḥusayn narrated to us.  He said: Ḥibbān narrated to us from al-Kalbī from Abū Ṣāliḥ from Ibn ʿAbbās:  “And what of him who stands upon a clear sign from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it” ʿAlī عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ specifically.

Addendum

[Tafsir Furāt al-Kūfī] Furāt said: al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥakam narrated to us on the authority of ʿAbbād b. ʿAbdullāh al-Asadī.  He said: I heard ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ while he was upon the minbar.  He said: By God, the razors have not been drawn upon a man from Quraysh but that a verse or two verses have been sent down.

He said: So a man from the people said: A verse has not been sent down regarding you.

He said: So he began angry, then he said: Had you asked me upon the heads of the people I would not have narrated to you.  Have you read sūra Hūd?

Then he recited: “And what of him who stands upon a clear sign from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it”.  So the Messenger of God صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم is upon a clear sign from his Lord, and I am the witness from Him.
